First I want to say the MAE is a great resource to the autocross community! Our club is looking forward to utilizing it next season!

Our club groups SCCA classes together. So when I set up our first event, I created custom classes for people to sign up. This worked great! But then we realized that we also need to know what each entries individual SCCA class was. For example:

'99 Miata C-Stock

Signs up for local class: S2 (BS/CS/ES)
Also needs to let the club know his individual class: CS

When we do this, we end up with the person signed up for CS not S2.

Does that make sense? Does it matter what order I put questions on the registration form?

Maybe we should just use the "pick class" function for the local grouped classes and then use a "fill in" for the individual classes?

Thanks in advance!

A person can only register in one class at at time.

You could use the pick list for your local classes and a generic fill-in for the SCCA standard class, since it is just "additional information only" at that point.

If you put the class picklist and the class fill-in items on the same registration form the second item listed on the form will over-write the class specified in the first item when the registration is submitted and saved.
